How To Donate Hair To Art Of Wigs
The Art of Wigs is thrilled to accept your hair donation! Hair donations of 12 inches or more help reduce the cost of a custom wig for clients undergoing cancer treatments or living with alopecia. Every donation truly makes a difference. As you follow the steps below, please know that your generosity is helping women regain their confidence during a difficult time.
We accept hair that has been professionally and naturally highlighted or lowlighted, as long as it is healthy and undamaged. However, we cannot accept hair that has been:
- Highlighted more than 2 shades lighter than your natural base color (ask your stylist if you're unsure)
- Permed
- Colored all over, whether professionally or with a box dye
- Chemically straightened
- Dyed with unnatural colors or henna
Please ensure your hair is in great condition, follows these guidelines, and has freshly trimmed ends before measuring. Over processed hair, hair that is too short, or hair with all-over color cannot be used.
How to Donate:
Step 1 – Measure Your Hair
To measure properly, place your hair in a pigtail and measure from the top of the band to the bottom tip. You are ready to donate if you have 12 or more inches of healthy hair.
Step 2 – Prep Your Hair
We can only use clean, healthy hair. Wash your hair with your favorite shampoo and conditioner, comb it through, and let it air-dry naturally. Please do not braid the hair so we can see its natural texture and condition.
Step 3 – Cut Your Hair
Visit a stylist familiar with hair donations. Pull clean, dry hair into 2 to 6 tight pigtails or braids, securing each with a rubber band. If your hair is layered, we can only use lengths of 10 inches or longer, and will discard the rest. Cut just above the rubber band and place each pigtail into a ziplock bag. Take a deep breath and think of the women you’ll be helping—then enjoy your new short style!
Step 4 – Mail Your Donation
Place your clean, dry hair (secured in a ziplock bag) into a large envelope. Make sure you use enough postage, or the post office will return it. We love to share donor stories with our clients—feel free to include before and after photos and a note of encouragement!
Once we receive your donation, your photos and message will be saved in our 'Angel Books' for clients to read and enjoy. Your hair will be processed, measured, and stored until it matches a client’s needs.
Although we no longer send thank-you notes due to time and cost constraints, please accept our deepest and most heartfelt THANK YOU.
